Social Networking

Social Networking has been an issue in my household for several months. I was dead set against my children having a MySpace page or doing any social networking. I have learned as I loosened the reins on this that it is doable with a lot of monitoring. I have three kids at home that now have pages of their own. My husband has a page so we can check on their pages on a daily/weekly basis. We also have an older son who checks and will let us know if we miss something. This actually helped my husband become a little more tech savvy. I do not want a page due to the fact that som many students have them and I would not them seeking mine out.
I am very anxious to learn about Flickr. As a photography buff I take a lot of pictures. It would be a great thing to be able to share these with family that lives out of town. I have not figured out how I will use a wiki yet but it is on my mind. I have ideas but do not know if my district will allow it yet. When you work for a bigger district rather then an individual school things have to go through so many steps to be able to start something like this that it becomes so frustrating that you have a tendency just to give it up.

Though I do not have kids, I understand you being hesitant to allow your children to have a MySpace page. I also have been torn on setting one up.

Many of my high school friends have one and it would be a great way to keep in touch, but I am VERY worried that my students can and would find me. I just don't know if I want to share that part of my life with them. I think that your husband has a page to help monitor it was a fabulous idea. I have many parents that don't know they have a myspace page or don't care. I like parents like you!!! Great Job!!

To go along with Andrea's comment, as I do not have children of my own, I am reluctant to create my on account whether on MySpace or FaceBook. Mostly I am reluctant due to the fact that I am a high school teacher many of my students state that they have not found me on either of these sites. When I reply "I do not have one" many students conclude that they have found many other teachers. Of course, as we progress further into this course my thoughts are changing.

Interestingly, you can set up an account and make it private so students would not find you - and only let your friends find you. Or, when a student asks to be your friend you deny them.

Many options in networking.
